Optimal maintenance strategy of production system under general renewal process

Abstract

When a component in a production system fails, selecting an appropriate maintenance strategy is crucial for manufacturing enterprises. Most previous studies focus on minimizing maintenance costs, overlooking the potential impact on the system's net profit. To maximize net profit over the system's life cycle, This paper designed a maintenance/replacement strategy based on the generalized renewal process. This strategy uses maintenance count and virtual age to model system reliability, and simulation techniques to capture reliability transitions between maintenance decisions. This paper established a maintenance model that maximizes net profit by defining maintenance and replacement costs, as well as operating profit and cost. This paper solved the model using a semi-Markov decision process, parameter estimation, and dynamic programming. A numerical experiment on a CNC machine tool spindle validated the model, showing a 19.96% improvement in net profit compared to the Rosqvist’s model. Sensitivity analysis revealed that key parameters significantly affect optimal maintenance decisions. In conclusion, this model provides an effective approach for maximizing net profit in the system’s life cycle.
