Parallel optimization of finite difference algorithm in CESM based on many-core processor

Abstract

Aiming at the problems of the excessive memory-read redundancy and communication overhead on the parallel computing of applying the finite difference algorithm in CESM, this paper proposed several optimization schemes, included data reconstruction according to different data structures, computing core group and pipeline communication. These schemes solved the deficiency of lacking shared buffer in the process of reading data and low bandwidth utilization when the finite difference algorithm in CESM was transplanted to SW26010 heterogeneous many-core processor. The experiments demonstrate that performance improvement of as high as 21.2x can be achieved by applying the proposed algorithm and optimization strategies.
