Byzantine fault tolerance algorithm for consortium blockchain

Abstract

In the application scenario of consortium chain, this paper analyzed the high communication cost and the selection of the master node in the most widely used PBFT algorithm, and proposed OBFT algorithm. Firstly, for high communication cost problem, OBFT algorithm realized optimistic synchronous Byzantine fault tolerance through dynamic timeout, and combined the checkpoint protocol in PBFT algorithm. When a timeout was triggered, it indicated that the node was in asynchronous state, in order to achieve Byzantine fault tolerance. The algorithm switched back to the partial synchronization Byzantine fault tolerance, that was, executed the commit phase of the PBFT algorithm, and used the stable checkpoint as the starting point for a new round of OBFT. Secondly, it used the integral system to optimize the selection process of the master node, and guaranteed the optional master node to conform to the longest chain principle of the blockchain. Finally, based on local multi-node simulation experiments, the OBFT algorithm improves transaction throughput and scalability, and effectively reduces transaction latency.
